Through the hate of warring factions, in defiance of their families and in secrecy from their closest friends, a young couple risk all they have to be together.

Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare's most thrilling and popular plays, confronts each new generation with its passion and force.

The National's first ever production of Romeo and Juliet on the South Bank is performed by the new NT Ensemble.

The title roles are played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was in the sell-out run of Blue/Orange in the Cottesloe, and Charlotte Randle, whose recent work includes The Taming of the Shrew (RSC).

Until recently, Tim Supple was Artistic Director of the Young Vic, where his last productions were A Servant of Two Masters and Tales from Ovid for the RSC. Recent work at the National includes Haroun and the Sea of Stories.

Running time is 3 hours 5 minutes including one 20 minute interval
