Needles and Opium was first seen in October 1991 at the Palais Montcalm in Quebec City, then at the National Centre for the Arts, Ottawa in November 1991. In 1992 there were performances at the Theater am Turm, Frankfurt; Le Manège, Maubeuge, France; and at the Cuvilliers Theater, Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich, before the production's opening at the Cottesloe Theatre.
