Contacting the Studio
The Studio is the National Theatre’s engine room. It’s also an irreplaceable resource for the whole of British theatre. Actors, directors, theatre-makers of all sorts – and above all writers – use it to dream, to work, to sweat over ideas that aren’t ready and to hone stuff that is nearly there. It keeps us alive.
Nicholas Hytner, Director of the NT
Most of the Studio’s work takes place by invitation, and we rarely take forward unsolicited proposals. However, we are happy to hear from directors, writers and other artists who would like to know more about what we do and how to get involved.
Actors, Writers & Composers
Actors, writers and composers seeking to contact the Studio about auditions, play readings or with submissions of work, should first contact the National Theatre’s Casting, Literary or Music Departments, who will pass your information on to the Studio as appropriate. Please direct enquiries to:
Casting: jhorsley@nationaltheatre.org.uk
Literary: please follow the General Contacts link at the bottom of this page for submission guidelines.
Music: mscott@nationaltheatre.org.uk
Directors, Designers & Choreographers
If you are contacting the Studio about staff directing, about the Directors’ Course or with a general enquiry, please write to the Studio Associate with a covering letter and CV.
If you are contacting the Studio with a project or workshop proposal, or about an attachment, please write to the Head of Studio or email the general enquiry address below.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications for Directors’ Bursaries. Appointments are made by invitation from the Head of Studio.
Inviting us to see your work
Whenever possible, we will try to respond positively to invitations. However, due to the large number we receive, we ask that you send your information to the Studio Associate in the first instance, at least 4-6 weeks before the production takes place. It is a good idea to follow this up with an email reminder the week prior to opening.
For all other enquiries, please contact studio@nationaltheatre.org.uk
or call the Studio Assistant on 020 7452 3122.
Without the Studio, I’m certain Dealer’s Choice would have remained a vague idea. Similarly, I wrote Closer with the help of the Studio, and it had its first reading there. The Studio can be a place for rehearsed readings, for discussions with actors, writers and directors, it can be a place to moan, a desk to write at, a photocopier. The artistic policy is to trust the artist to do whatever he or she wants.
